Royal Garrison

Curriculum

Kindergarten

Royal Garrison School offers a Kindergarten program for 4 & 5 year old students. The curriculum provides a foundation for continued learning.

MATH: the Saxon Math K program uses hands-on materials to introduce students to math concepts and strategies. Children learn that math includes not only number, but the calendar, patterns, money, time and comparisons of shapes and sizes to name a few.

READING & LANGUAGE ARTS: We use the phonics-based reading program, Beginning. The study of phonics provides the building blocks and thus the keys to reading. Along with this we use children's literature and related activities to develop the student's appreciation and enjoyment of reading.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES: Students study the world around them with many hands-on activities. Typical science units might include weather, polar animals, insects, or growing plants. Social studies surveys basics about our nation, family, community and the world.

CHARACTER & MANNERS: Small classes allow the teacher to work directly with the children and teach character & manners by instruction and example. Bible stories, songs, and story books provide many illustrations, with an emphasis on honesty, responsibility, self-control and respect for others and self.

PENMANSHIP: Royal Garrison uses D'Nealian or modern manuscript for penmanship practice.

ART & MUSIC: Students participate in numerous art and music activities.

Elementary and Middle School

We use materials from a variety of Christian and secular publishers, seeking the best materials for each subject. For math, Saxon Math: it is an incremental program, with each concept building upon previously learned material. Direct reading instruction: phonics-based materials, so students learn the building blocks of English. Science: presenting God's creation with many hands-on activities to supplement textbooks. History & Geography: building from families to communities, countries, continents and oceans in early grades. We also study U.S. exploration, settlement, and states with related geography. In Middle School the students begin world history. Bible studies: an emphasis on character development. Students memorize verses and learn about Bible heroes. Spelling, penmanship, grammar, vocabulary development, and writing round out the curriculum.
